How it works
The owner says they are abroad and cannot come, and asks for a deposit before arranging a viewing, then asks for more money for various reasons. The rent is far below similar homes in the same area. They say “many people are viewing” or “it is gone if you do not pay today”.
How to spot it
- The rent is far lower than similar homes.
- You are asked to pay before any viewing.
- They will not show the home by video or in person.
- You are pushed to decide quickly because others are waiting.
What to do
- Pay nothing before viewing.
- Check the agent on the CEA public register.
- Insist on viewing in person and check the address.
- If you already paid: keep the transfer and chat records, contact your bank and report it to the police.
This is a sample case based on public information from the police and CEA.
