Never pay any deposit before viewing

If anyone asks you to transfer money, scan a code or pay a personal account before you have seen the home, stop and verify first.

How to verify

Most rental scams start with “pay a deposit first”. Run these 5 checks before you decide to go on.

  1. Check the agent on the CEA public register. Name, CEA registration number and agency must match the register.
  2. Check the address and photos. Address, floor and photos should fit together. Be careful when the same photos appear elsewhere.
  3. View first, talk about payment later. If you have not viewed the home, pay nothing.
  4. Do not pay a personal account or scan a code. If you are asked to pay a personal account or scan a code, stop.
  5. Keep the chat records. Save chats and payment receipts so you have a record if something goes wrong.

Search the agent’s name or registration number on the CEA public register.

What the verified badge means

"Verified poster" only means the poster's identity or documents were checked against the rules. It does not guarantee the condition of the home or the safety of a deal.
