Most rental scams start with “pay a deposit first”. Run these 5 checks before you decide to go on.
- Check the agent on the CEA public register. Name, CEA registration number and agency must match the register.
- Check the address and photos. Address, floor and photos should fit together. Be careful when the same photos appear elsewhere.
- View first, talk about payment later. If you have not viewed the home, pay nothing.
- Do not pay a personal account or scan a code. If you are asked to pay a personal account or scan a code, stop.
- Keep the chat records. Save chats and payment receipts so you have a record if something goes wrong.
Search the agent’s name or registration number on the CEA public register.
