Renting breaks down into five steps. At every step, do not rush to pay. Check the facts first.
Step 1: Set a budget and an area
Decide the monthly rent you can afford and how long the commute to work or school may take. In PropSeek you can filter by MRT station and commute time, then compare with the rent reference pages by town.
Step 2: Search and get in touch
Before you contact a publisher, look at who they are on the listing page. Agents carry a CEA registration number, and owner listings say so clearly.
Step 3: View the home
- View first, then talk about payment.
- Check that the address, the floor and the photos fit together.
- Ask what the rent includes, for example utilities, internet and management fees.
Step 4: Sign the lease
- Confirm the lease term, the deposit and the advance rent, and put them in the contract.
- Confirm who is responsible for repairs and what happens on early termination.
- Keep the contract, the payment receipts and the chat records.
Step 5: Move in
On move-in day, check the furniture and appliances together with the owner or agent, take photos, and confirm how many keys you received.
